State and county fairs are more than just summer celebrations of agriculture and community; they are significant economic drivers for local economies, and the impact is even larger in rural areas. These events attract millions of visitors, stimulate local businesses, and create jobs, injecting substantial revenue into host communities. Most times, they are the single largest gathering of people in the community. By examining specific examples and leveraging strategic communication, fairs can amplify their economic impact and public awareness.
In Pennsylvania, a 2023 study by Econsult Solutions Inc. revealed that the state's 107 county and local fairs generate $1.14 billion annually, supporting over 10,700 full-time jobs and drawing four million visitors who spend $673 million in rural communities. For instance, the Great Allentown Fair, a six-day event, attracts 167,300 attendees, contributing $62.5 million and supporting 600 jobs, while the Bloomsburg Fair generates over $80 million and 700 jobs. These figures highlight how fairs boost local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and retail, while fostering direct-to-consumer farm sales, reinforcing Pennsylvania's leadership in this sector.
Similarly, the Illinois State Fair in Springfield generates $86 million in business volume, including $35 million in wages and $2.67 million in sales taxes, benefiting Sangamon County and surrounding areas. To the south, the Du Quoin State Fair, Illinois' second state fair, adds $6 million to southern Illinois, with ripple effects in nearby towns like Mount Vernon and Carbondale due to increased hotel stays and restaurant traffic. These fairs create a surge in demand for local services, from gas stations to tourism, demonstrating their role as economic catalysts.
The State Fair of Texas in Dallas is an example of large-scale impact, contributing up to $680 million to North Texas in 2023. Its core activities, including operations and visitor spending, generated $422.2 million and 4,486 jobs, while secondary activities like vendor sales and football games added millions more. The fair's $15.8 million in philanthropic giving further supports local nonprofits, enhancing community resilience.
These examples underscore the multifaceted economic contributions of fairs, from direct spending to job creation to local scholarships and tax revenue. However, public awareness of these impacts is often low, as many view fairs as entertainment rather than economic engines.
To get the word out, fairs should adopt strategic communication strategies. Publicize economic impact studies, whether they are for your fair or examples from other events. Emphasize tangible benefits like job creation and local business growth. This past year Pennsylvania's Department of Agriculture effectively shared its study findings at the 2025 PA State Association of County Fairs Convention, gaining media coverage.
You should also look to partner with local chambers of commerce and tourism boards to promote your economic value. Business, local politicians and other stakeholders will be more apt to engage with the fair and support it knowing what we bring to the table.
State and county fairs are vital economic engines, impacting the local and regional communities. Get the word out! Educate the public about your economic significance to foster greater support and participation, ensuring continued prosperity.
