The heat is off, or at least it soon will be. The California State Fair is changing its operating dates beginning in 2027 in an effort to avoid the often scorching summer temperatures at the Sacramento fairgrounds.
According to a recent press release, the fair will run from September 17 through October 3 in the fall of 2027. The date change was approved by the California State Fair and Exposition Board following several years of analysis, along with consistent feedback from fairgoers who cited high temperatures and reluctance to attend during peak summer heat.
This year's fair, however, will remain in its traditional summer timeframe and will run from July 7 through August 2.
Tom Martinez, CEO of the California Exposition and State Fair, says the fair's leadership team has been searching for ways to create a more comfortable experience for attendees. He describes the move to autumn as an opportunity to offer a more enjoyable environment while preserving the traditions Californians value.
Martinez adds that the fair held extensive discussions with vendors, staff, and fairgoers and carefully evaluated feedback before making the decision.
“We've spoken extensively with our vendors, community partners, concessionaires, and key stakeholders, and everyone understands the need for the date shift,” Martinez said. “The move also aligns with several other state fairs that operate during the fall.”
High temperatures have taken a toll on fairgoers, vendors, and exhibitors alike. Summer heat in 2023 contributed to a nine percent drop in attendance from the previous year. Extreme temperatures also affected much of the fair's 2024 run. That year proved record-breaking, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees on 45 days statewide, including several dates during the fair.
Alex Alcantar, the fair's business development manager, says summer heat has been one of the event's biggest challenges. Feedback from attendees consistently indicated that cooler weather would be a strong incentive to return, as repeated exposure to peak summer temperatures kept many fairgoers at home.
In 2025, the fair adjusted its weekday opening time to 4 p.m. in an effort to help visitors avoid the hottest part of the day. The change appeared to help, and the event also benefited from unusually mild, fall-like weather by California standards. Attendance increased by eight percent over 2024, and the fair set a new single-day attendance record on July 26, 2025, when 90,000 people attended. Fair officials note, however, that such weather conditions cannot be relied upon year after year.
The delay in transitioning to fall dates reflects the need for long-term planning. Vendors and partners were unable to make the change on short notice.
“We have to work with all of our different stakeholders and vendors on what they've already programmed for 2026,” Alcantar explains. “This was a long-term decision.”
Those vendors include long-standing carnival provider Butler Amusements. Carnival routes require extensive planning and cannot be altered quickly. Butler supplies midways to hundreds of fairs across California and Arizona and debuted a new ride at the California State Fair last year, a KMG Move-It ride re-themed as The Invader.
Once the new dates are in place, Alcantar emphasizes they will remain consistent.
“These are the dates we're going for from now on,” he says, adding that he believes the timing change will ultimately benefit the fair.
Martinez notes broad support for the shift among vendors and attendees. Alcantar adds that vendor feedback has been especially positive, as many fair workers and carnival operators endure long hours in extreme heat without the option of retreating to air-conditioned spaces.
“They have to endure this in 100-degree weather,” Alcantar says. “For them, the feedback was very, very positive.”
The move to fall dates also reconnects the fair with its agricultural roots. Alcantar notes that the new schedule aligns with harvest season, which he says is an ideal time to showcase California agriculture.
“Our fair is built on agriculture,” he says, “and that's a great time to highlight the best of California.”
Historically, the California State Fair has not always operated in midsummer. Prior to 2010, the fair typically opened in late August and extended into early September. The shift to July was made to accommodate shrinking summer school breaks and to boost attendance. Over time, however, rising temperatures made that strategy less effective.
Today, fair officials see few conflicts with school schedules in returning to autumn dates and anticipate a more pleasant experience overall. Local meteorologists estimate a typical six- to ten-degree temperature drop in the Sacramento region between July and mid-September, a change Martinez describes as creating a far more comfortable environment.
This year's fair will serve as the final summer send-off. While operating hours have not yet been announced, later opening times are expected to return, alongside the fair's familiar mix of food, live entertainment, carnival rides, and agricultural exhibits from across the state.
