On Thursday, July 19, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security passed its Fiscal 2019 appropriations bill. The measure does not currently include any H-2B cap relief. We are hopeful that an H-2B returning worker exemption will be added during the full committee markup on the bill on Wednesday. Reps. Harris (R-MD), Cuellar (D-TX) and others will offer the amendment. In order for an H-2B fix to be added to the bill, we need you to do the following TODAY:
- Call your Representative and ask him or her to sign onto the letter that Reps. Bergman (R-MI) and Keating (D-MA) will soon circulate to Appropriations Committee leaders asking that they include an H-2B returning worker exemption in the bill. We will share a copy of that letter as soon as it is available, but since there will be a quick turnaround time for signatures, it is helpful to begin outreach to you Representatives now.
- If and only if your Representative is on the Appropriations Committee, please call and ask him or her to support the Harris-Cuellar H-2B returning worker amendment to the Fiscal 2019 Homeland Security appropriations bill during the committee markup next week. Calls from non-constituents are not helpful. If you are not sure who your Representative is, you can look him or her up at www.house.gov. A list of committee members is below.
- You can reach your Representative through the Capitol switchboard at 202-225-3121. Once connected to the office, ask to speak to the person who handles H-2B issues.
