Columbus – The Ohio State Fair awarded the midway contract to Amusements Of America today. Amusements Of America has held the contract at the Ohio State Fair since 1993. They brought 69 rides to this year’s fair and ride gross and gate attendance were both higher in 2006 than 2005. Dominic Vivona, Jr. explains, "We were excited to have the Fireball and Space Roller back this year. This was the strongest ride lineup ever, and the crowds responded." Yesterday, the Marketing/PR/Entertainment/Rental Committee voted to recommend Amusements Of America as the carnival provider. Today, both the Administrative/Fiscal Committee and the full commission approved the recommendation. "We are thrilled to be going back to the Ohio State Fair. We have a long standing mutually beneficial relationship in Ohio that serves us both well", states Vivona. The contract is for two years, 2007 and 2008, with the right to extend the contract through 2009 and 2010 with the approval of both parties and the controlling board. The contract calls for Amusements Of America to pay the fair 40% of all wristband and coupon sales up to $1,500,000; 43% from 1,500,001 through 1,750,00; and 45% for all wristband/coupon sales over $1,750,000. Concessions pay $85/front linear foot for lineup space and $135/linear foot for the long side on center space. The carnival also pays 50% of the cost of tickets and wristbands, and $10,000 flat for the privilege of using their own employee IDs for admission to the fair. When asked about challenges, Vivona replied, "Our challenge continues to be in the concessions area; mostly games and some food. Vendors are drying up, and no new concessionaires are there to take their place. We are always looking for great new vendors." Three carnivals submitted proposals for the contract; Amusements Of America, Wade Shows and North American Midway Entertainment (NAME). “The committee visited NAME in Indianapolis, and Wade Shows in Michigan as part of their research, and were impressed by both companies’ presentations as well as operations. After the visits, all three companies were asked for additional information that would aid us in further differentiating between them, and all three readily complied. In the end, it became apparent to the committee that the best fit at the present time for the Ohio State Fair was to continue the present course with Amusements of America” said Luis Perez, Assistant General Manager for the Ohio State Fair.
