2009 CNE Billed as A Year to Remember
NAME/Conklin provides the midway for the 72nd year
Rides 4U - New & Used Rides Giant Wheel Foreman Wanted
The 2009 Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) was one to remember! Despite the shaky economy, more than 1.32 million people streamed through the CNE gates over 18 days from August 21 to September 7th. A financial contribution from Government of Canada, confirmed in mid-July, made it possible at the last minute for the CNE to stage a number of additional special events including a keynote address by former U.S President Bill Clinton and an international friendly soccer match between Portugal Benfica SL and Scotland Celtic. In addition, the funds helped pay for sports superstars Elvis Stojko, who enhanced the fair's Aerial Acrobatic and Ice Skating Shows and Tony Hawk, who appeared for two days at the FLOWRIDER Mobile Wave attraction. The federal contribution also enabled the CNE to market these events in cities outside of the Greater Toronto Area, including Buffalo and Rochester, NY and Detroit, MI. The fair got off to a terrific start with an enormous public response to the CNE's $1.75 Opening Day admission, staged in celebration of the 175th Anniversary of the City of Toronto. The fair sustained the momentum throughout it,s run, and wound up on a high note with excellent Labor Day weekend weather and a spectacular 60th Anniversary Air Show featuring stellar aeronautic performers headlines by the US Navy Blue Angels. This year, the CNE's Best Game Concession Award went to Ozzy Mostowy of Ostop Concessions for his rainforest themed Bowler Roller, and the Best Food Concession Award went to Brooke and Carla Wray of Billbrooke Concessions for their Candy Trailer in the CNE,s Horse Palace line. The winner of the inaugural CNE Green Smart Award for the most environmentally proactive concessionaire was awarded to Shellie and Les Clarke of Premier Amusements for their solar powered Duck Pond game. North American Midway Entertainment's Amber Swedgan commented that the show had a terrific year at the event and 2009 marked the 72nd consecutive year for Conklin/NAME to provide the midway for the CNE. The show had a total of 58 rides on the midway including the Banzai, a Kamikaze style ride which made its first appearance at the CNE. On opening day, NAME ran a special promotion allowing visitors to ride 10 rides for the low cost of $17.50, which was a tremendous success. Overall, the Canadian National Exhibition can likely be cited as the greenest fair in North America, having re-cycled 77.3% of solid waste (1,228,120 kg or 558, 236 lbs was diverted) during the 18 days of the 2009 fair. Next year's CNE will take place from August 20 to September 6, 2010.
