SACRAMENTO, CA (December 17, 2007) - In 2008 Californians will have two more days to have BIG FUN at the California State Fair. At its December board meeting, the California Exposition & State Fair board of directors voted to expand the State Fair operating schedule from 16 days to 18 days. The 2008 State Fair dates will be August 15 - September 1 with Mondays open. Primarily, the new schedule supports the needs of the State Fair to contract with a midway operator, vendors and concessionaires who travel throughout the Fair circuit, while also allowing the Fair to maximize attendance. "The Fair industry is very closely connected in a circuit of dates and each Fair's schedule determines how vendors and concessionaires move from one Fair to the next," said Norb Bartosik, State Fair CEO and General Manager. "We cannot extend the duration of the State Fair, but we can increase the number of days we're open and still allow our business partners to make the circuit jump from Southern California to Cal Expo and on to their next destination after Labor Day," said Bartosik. The Cal Expo Board of Directors unanimously agreed that the additional days open would provide a greater opportunity for people to enjoy the State Fair, while also increasing the Fair's overall potential for revenue from ticket sales and concessions. Even with a shortened 16 day schedule in 2007 the State Fair saw its average daily attendance increase by more than 10 percent from the previous year, as well as similar increases in food and carnival revenue. But Fair officials believe that a 16 day schedule is too short for busy families. "The State Fair is all about BIG FUN for families. By returning to an 18 day consecutive format, we're providing more opportunity for people to enjoy everything the State Fair has to offer in a timeframe that works for our business partners as well," said Bartosik.
