The 2012 edition of the IAAPA Attractions expo kicked off Tuesday at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL.  Crowds on opening day well represented the park industry, with some owners and operators attending from the carnival industry.  Below are some highlights from Tuesday:

  • Robofusion introduced the world's first robotic, self serve frozen yogurt kiosk.  Guests can customize their own frozen yogurt creation using a touch screen.  After the customer selects the items they want on their creation, a robot inside the self contained unit prepares the creation in a plastic souvenir cup.  When the creation is finished, the robot places the creation in a rotating window which opens for the customer to retrieve their treat.  The dual unit is capable of producing 140 treats per hour (70 treats per hour on the single unit).  Suggested retail cost for each creation is anywhere between $6 and $10.  Robofusion works with its vendors on a revenue sharing program, or, the vendor may purchase the unit outright for a nominal fee.  The dual unit sells for approximately $200,000.

  • Rides 4-U was well represented inside and outside of the trade show.  Outside, the company had a Chance Century Wheel owned by Deggeller Attractions on display with one of its Maxtron LED lighting systems.  Also on display outside at Rides 4-U's booth was a carousel from Hi-Lite rides and a mini swing from S&S.  Inside the company displayed its numerous LED lighting packages as well as a Frog Hopper, and a ride from SBF.  Rides 4-U will be sponsoring a party at Fun Spot Orlando on Wednesday, November 14th from 7-9pm.  The company will showcase some of its rides and LED packages at the event, as well as provide entertainment and food for its guests.

  • RockTops, a part of Dip N Dot's display, displayed a new food tray that mounts to the top of your beverage for eating on the go.  Guests can now easily eat a hot dog while holding onto their drink with the drink straw protruding through the middle of the tray.

  • Glimmer Body Art displayed their patented glitter body art tattoos.  The tattoos are well suited for fairs, festivals, amusement parks, and private venues.  Unlike other temporary tattoos, Glimmer Body Art uses different colors of glitter to make their tattoos stand out.  Retail cost of a tattoo can be anywhere between $5 and $10 depending on the complexity of the design and number of glitter colors used.  Wholesale cost for each tattoo is around 50 cents.

  • Outside the trade show, ARM had on display its new Ali Baba, themed Rockstar with a LED lighting package and graphics by Amusement Wraps.  Also on display was their Vertigo.

  • Bob's Space Racers had a impressive indoor display featuring many of its popular games including Stinky Feet, Whopper Water, and several new games including the Strike Zone.  Tony Cassata explained while the new game has been popular, it is too large to be trailer mounted.

  • Zamperla had their new Air Race ride on display indoors.  The piece was catching a lot of attention with its multiple motions and bright LED lighting system.  The piece on display is owned by Playworld Amusements and recently debuted at the Texas State Fair in Dallas.

Stay tuned to MCW all week for further updates on the IAAPA Attractions Expo.
