Chicago Area Concessionaires Donate Toys to Newtown, CT

Three independent concessionaires drove a truckload of 3,000 new toys to Newtown, Conn. to help grieving families affected by the shootings that left 26 dead in that city, including 20 children.
Games vendors Peter Kasin and his nephew Kevin Kasin, and food operator Dave Jaros, all members of the Showmen's League of America, delivered the toys early Wednesday morning after driving through the night from Greater Chicago to Connecticut. They met with Newtown police who helped them distribute the toys within the community. The three men then turned around drove right back to Chicago to beat a winter storm.
The whirlwind trip covered 2,000 miles and a total of 34 hours' driving time, Peter Kasin said.
"I just felt like doing something to help out," said Kasin, whose family books games with Skinners' Amusments. "It was such a tragedy."
Ideal Toy Co., a carnival novelty supplier, provided all the toys and paid for one-third of the items. The Showmen's League covered the costs of the remaining toys and are conducting a fund-raising campaign among its membership to defray its expenses, Kasin said. Members donating $200 to the cause will have their names inscribed on a special plaque commemorating the cause.
The total value of the 3,000 toys was about $5,000, Kasin said.
The Newtown shootings hit home for the Showmen's League. The Dec. 14 incident happened the same morning as the group's annual holiday party for Hanson Park Elementary School students in Chicago. This year marked the 65th annual party with 15 live acts and free popcorn, soda and cotton candy given to the school kids. The party went on as scheduled at the insistence of Hanson Park officials, Kasin said.

Showmen's League to Host 65th Annual Christmas Party

The Showmen's League of America will be hosting its 65th annual Children's Christmas Party on December 14th at Hanson Park Elementary School in Chicago, IL.  Activities are scheduled to begin at 8:30am.  The party originated in 1946 by Nate Green with the idea of hosting a Christmas party for underprivileged children at the Sherman Hotel on Christmas Eve.  Nate started the party with a budget of $560, two clowns for entertainment, and 10 turkeys for dinner.  In its early days, the party entertained over 250 kids, while the current party entertains over 1,500 physically or mentally challenged children.  Co-Chairs Peter Kasin of Kasin Concessions and Donnie Massie III of Alpine Amusements help organize the event each year.  Giovanni Zoppe of Circus Zoppe will host three shows for the children and the kids will be each given a toy, popcorn and cotton candy, and a beverage all courtesy of the event's generous sponsors.  Kasin noted that "Santa will be giving an extra special Christmas present to each member that comes out to help".  Kasin also noted that they could not put on the event without their sponsors.  Such sponsors include Gold Medal, Porter Foods, NANCO, The Toy Factory, Toy Network, Classic Toy, Rhode Island Novelty, Ideal Toy, and several others.  More information can be found at

NJ Amusement Association Appeals for Assistance with Hurricane Sandy Victims

The New Jersey Amusement Association sustained a direct hit to the heart of the amusement industry as Hurricane Sandy damaged and destroyed more than 50 miles of the Jersey Shore and dozens of communities from Long Beach Island to Keansburg. Our member's homes, businesses and property were impacted as well as the property and homes of our communities and guests.

Many of these communities are served by volunteer first responders, including firefighters and emergency medical personnel, who performed vital emergency services at the height of the storm at great personal sacrifice. The New Jersey Amusement Association needs your help. Now is the time to assist those who risked their personal safety to help us survive Hurricane Sandy.

The NJAA will accept direct financial contributions to the volunteer first responders and their Associations. We will also aid by collecting and distributing food, personal articles and basic needs.

Listed below are items of needs as well as information should you wish to make a financial contribution. Please know how grateful we are for any assistance provided.

Clothing in all sizes (only new undergarments, please), water, soda, gatorade, powder drink mix, cooking oil, pancake mix, paper products, dish soap, sanitizers, sponges, scouring pads, bleach, non-perishable food, shoes, blankets, bed linens, toiletries and cleaning supplies. Iconic Big Tex burns to the ground at Dallas State Fair Park

The Texas State Fair's iconic "Big Tex" celebrated his 60th birthday yesterday. At approximately 10:15 am this morning, Big Tex burned to the ground. Texas State Fair spokeswoman, Sue Gooding, reported that a lot of smoke originated from the Big Tex's neck, which is where most of the mechanics and electrical wires reside that moves his mouth and head. "It's a very sad day for all fair-goers," fair spokeswoman Sue Gooding said. "It's a sad way to end the fair."

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said it was a shocking loss to the fair.  "Big things happen in Dallas, and Big Tex was a symbol of that. I'm sure we'll rebuild him and make him better than ever for the 21st century."

Second Show in the Chicago area to be vandalized in 2012 - offers $25,000 reward

Robert & Juanita Salerno's All Around Amusements was the latest victim of theft and vandalism in the Chicago area. Over the weekend, the show was set up at 119th & Marshfield in Chicago when vandals stole three 125ft sections of lead line, lead lines for 12 rides and ticket boxes, pins off rides, and control boxes to rides such as the Super Sizzler, Dragon Wagon, Tornado, Zero Gravity, Zamperla Samba, Moby Dick, and Pharaohs Fury. In addition to the theft, vandals cut other wires into 25ft sections. Salerno believes the vandals to be in the carnival industry. "Wires were cut clean and nothing turned up at any of the local scrap yards", Salerno stated, "A scrapper would have turned it in almost immediately for cash." As a result of the incident, All Around is offering a $25,000 cash reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the criminals who carried out such a crime. If anyone has any information, please call Robert at (630) 417-6360. Earlier this summer, Windy City Amusements was victim of a similar incident in the suburbs of Chicago, whom is also offering a $10,000 reward.

Wade Shows rolls out cashless ticketing at the South Mississippi Fair

Tomorrow, Wade Shows will be introducing its new wireless ticketing system at the South Mississippi Fair in Laurel, MS. The system which was licensed from the Funtastic group is designed to work on rides, food, and games, however, will only be utilized on rides for the time being. Customers purchase a card with a unique barcode on the back and is scanned by the ride attendant. Through a wireless network, the information is passed back to a server on the midway, verified, and then data is sent back to the scanner either approving or denying the customers transaction. Upon being scanned, credits for that particular attraction are removed from the customer's card. When empty, the cards can be reloaded at any ticket box. Other shows currently using this type of system include Funtastic Shows, Ray Cammack Shows, and Strates Shows.

Zaitshik "cautiously optimistic" that Sky Ride will open in time for Nebraska State Fair

Wade Show's Frank Zaitshik remains “cautiously optimistic” that the new Sky Ride for the Nebraska State Fair will make opening on August 24. Parts of the Sky Ride, a new attraction at the 2012 fair operated by Wade Shows, encountered some damage while being transported from Florida to the fairgrounds in Grand Island. On August 6, just outside Grand Island, two of the rides semi trailers were merging onto I-80 when another semi trailer collided with them, causing all three semis involved to catch fire. Ultimately, all of the contents of the trailer were destroyed in the fire. Through strong dedication by Wade Shows and help from the Nebraska State Fair, they were able to find replacement parts for the ride in hopes of making opening. Zaitshik reported “the cables were installed yesterday” and in coming days, the grip bars will be installed and the bull wheels will be calibrated.

Earlier this year, Wade Shows was awarded the 2012 contract to provide the Sky Ride for the Nebraska State Fair and the full carnival midway in 2013. The carnival rides and attractions are currently being provided by Belle City Amusements, a contract that they assumed through Jim Murphy's Mighty Bluegrass Shows.
